Kaarna Bindery
Small workshop, Helsinki
By appointment only

Books that are sewn, not glued, and meant to be opened for decades.

Kaarna Bindery is a one-room bookbinding studio in Helsinki. We make journals, guest books and photo albums to order, and we repair the books that families would rather not part with.

Every book begins with folded sheets of paper and linen thread. We sew the signatures by hand on a frame, round and back the spine where it helps the book to open flat, and cover it in cloth, paper or vegetable-tanned leather. Adhesives are wheat starch paste and reversible PVA, never hot-melt.

The studio is small on purpose. At any moment there are perhaps six books on the bench, and each one is the work of a single pair of hands from first fold to last burnish.

What we do

New books

Notebooks, sketchbooks, wedding and guest books, cased or in limp-vellum style, in the size and paper you choose.

Repair and rebinding

Loose hinges, broken spines, detached boards. Old covers are kept and reattached wherever possible.

Boxes and folders

Acid-free clamshell boxes and portfolios for letters, prints and family papers.

Working with us

Most projects start with a short message and a photograph. We reply within a few working days, suggest materials and give a fixed price before anything is cut. Typical turnaround is three to five weeks; winter is quieter than the weeks before Christmas, so book early for gifts.

Visits to the workshop are by appointment. Write to hello@example.com or read more about the studio, browse recent commissions, or see what is happening on the workbench.
